Holidays in Bentota

Holidays in Bentota offer a different angle on the watersports experience. Whereas most resorts rely on the sea, Bentota has its own inland lagoon, sheltered by palm groves. There you can try your hand at windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and diving. Alternatively, hire a boat and take a leisurely trip up river, where you'll find some gorgeous tropical scenery and an array of wildlife, including colourful kingfishers and the odd sleepy crocodile.

This is a fairly exclusive resort, so you don't hear the phrase 'bargain holidays to Bentota' all that often. That being said, you might be lucky enough to pick up one of those late deals. If you do, you'll have fallen on your feet. Thomson's two featured hotels are the tops when it comes to comfort and facilities. The Hotel Serendib is a tropical haven with coconut palms and lush gardens. Then there's the elegant Taj Exotica, quite simply one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka.

Travel to Bentota and you'll find it hard to tear yourself away from the wonderful beach, a palm-fringed piece of paradise that stretches for several kilometres along the coast. However, there are several places to visit in the area, including Bentota's own turtle hatchery, some interesting coir factories and Brief Garden, an old colonial house where Olivier and Leigh stayed while filming 'Elephant Walk'. And if you're prepared to venture further afield, Sri Lanka's lively capital, Colombo, is just 65km or so up the road.
