Guide to Candolim

"With its endless beach, carefree lifestyle and cavalcade of shops and restaurants, Candolim is pure, 100% Goa."

You've probably come to Goa expecting big things from the beaches anyway, but the sight of Candolim's sands will still fill you with joy. Disappearing over the horizon in both directions, it's a heavenly stretch of rosy-yellow sands that promise the sunbathe of your life.
Framed by pillow-soft dunes, you'll find patches of sand covered in sunbeds and sunshades, perfect if you're out for comfort. Otherwise, head for the empty spaces in-between – Candolim's quieter than many other North Goan hotspots - for your share of tropical tranquillity.
There's little else to do here but simply get in step with the Goan vibe and let your cares waft away. Lounge on the beach or by the pool accompanied by the rustle of overhanging palm fronds. Sample a fiery curry at a ramshackle cafe or fully-fledged restaurant along the main drag. Then dive into the souvenir shops and markets for tie-dye rainbow T-shirts, soft leather and sparkling gems. And as the sun melts below the horizon, enjoy a few cold beers in a palm-strewn beach bar, watching the sea change colour from deep blue to inky black.
For a taste of Goa's colonial past, visit the turreted fort and lighthouse of Fort Aguada, built by the Portuguese in 1612 and jutting out into the waters. Or explore inland to discover faded Portuguese churches, their paint-peeled exteriors standing listlessly under shady palms.
Or head in the opposite direction out into the Arabian ocean. Take a dolphin-spotting cruise, icy drinks provided, to feel the salt-caked breezes on your face. And come back, tired but totally in tune with Goa's world.

Eating out

Goa hosts a wide variety of cuisine such as Indian, Chinese and, due to Portuguese colonisation, seafood is also widely found. Goa itself is proud of its own recipes which are milder than some of the dishes served in the rest of the country.

Nightlife

Candolim is one of the busier resorts, where you'll find more nightlife than in other areas.

Shopping

Well situated for shopping. Panjim, the capital, has well established shops and vibrant food markets. Visit nearby Mapusa and its daily market. Anjuna with its Hippy Flea Market is also within easy reach and takes place every Wednesday.

Local information

Visit the tiny villages of rural Goa where narrow streets jammed with bullock carts and scooters wend their way between coconut groves and ramshackle, red-brick homes. Surrounded by emerald green countryside, stop awhile to soak up some Indian culture and enjoy an icy drink beneath the shade of a lofty banyan tree.
