Incredibly cosmopolitan and crammed with history and culture, Geneva's a diverse city that's ideal for a city break. And from the moment you arrive you'll begin to appreciate just how much there is to do here.
Much of Geneva's life revolves around its lakefront. And rightly so. A walk along the lakeside takes you past beautiful old houses and nigh-on exotic plants and flowers. On the right bank you'll find the Brunswick Monument housing the tomb of the Duke of Brunswick, Charles II – a man who left his fortune to the city. Crossing the Mont-Blanc bridge across to the left bank brings you to the Jardin Anglais with its famous flower clock and the National Monument commemorating Geneva's unification with the rest of Switzerland in 1815. And then of course, there's the postcard famous Jet d'eau that shoots a column of water 450 feet into the air. It's simple but oddly captivating!
Elsewhere, a city break to Geneva wouldn't be complete without taking in at least some of the following. First off, there's Saint Peter's Cathedral. Dating back to 1160, its current neo-classical appearance stems from the mid 18th-century. Nowadays, climbing the 157 steps presents you with glorious panoramic views of the city.
Meanwhile, for a guided tour, look no further than the United Nations building. Second only in importance to its sibling in New York, the Palais des Nations became the headquarters of the UN in 1946. Or for a little more history, why not take in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum? Sat conveniently opposite the UN building, the museum celebrates the work of Henry Dunant and pays tribute to the selfless work of the men and women who have served the Red Cross for over 140 years.
Of course, this is barely scratching the surface of what a city break in Geneva could entail. We've not even touched on the famed jewellery shopping available, the chocolate shops or the cheese. Nor have we mentioned the Michelin starred restaurants or the cosy little cafes specialising in savoury and sweet fondues. In fact, there really is so much to this little city that it's hard to really do it justice. So don't just take our word on how lovely it is, take a city break in Geneva and experience it first hand.
