There's an air of laid-back tranquillity about San Juan that captures everything that club-free Ibiza is about. Come to this unspoilt rural village in the island's peaceful north-east and you'll feel like you're light years away from its hedonistic, party-mad resorts. It's peace and quiet all the way. In the morning, tuck into fresh coffee and pastries whilst you watch the sun burning the mist off the mountains. Wander the cobbled streets, admiring whitewashed cottages with flower-filled balconies and rough-hewn wooden doors. Pop into a friendly coffee bar or linger in the sunshine over a chilled wine, while you decide what to do with your day. Maybe tiptoe around the handsome 18th century church that dominates the village. But whatever you do, don't expect much to disturb the mellow atmosphere, even at night. Come dusk, San Juan's only contribution to Ibiza's party scene is a few relaxed restaurants, perfect for feasting on guixat de peix, the island's tasty fish stew before returning home for a moonlit nightcap or two. Disappear into your holiday daydreams and take to the local beaches. Closest is Cala San Vicente, where a cheery seaside resort overlooks a beautiful crescent of sands and irresistibly blue shallow seas. Or hide away in any of the cliff-backed coves littering the north coast like stunning Benirras or Xarraca or the lovely inlets of Portinatx. And while you're out and about, take a detour to the C'an Marca caves. This dazzling underground world of caverns was once used by smugglers and will whip your breath away.
