The actual village of San Jose sits halfway up the side of the island's tallest mountain, Sa Talaia (475 metres high). It is dominated by its fortress church which dates back to the 15th Century, but took 300 years to complete. It would appear that the local construction industry has speeded up somewhat over the years, but San Jose seems to have been largely overlooked as the capital of the largest municipality of the island.
Being on the other (and recently improved) main road between Ibiza and San Antonio it doesn't offer much parking space and so retains its high country tranquility. From the top of the mountain upon which the village stands you can see both the Spanish mainland and Majorca on a good day. An excellent vantage point for studying a sunset and incredibly - you can drive all the way to the top! This is the wildest and therefore prettiest corner of the island.
