Guide to Formentera

"Formentera is a quiet, peaceful place, the ideal antidote to the hectic activity of tourist Ibiza."

The island of Formentera is one of the Mediterranean's unspoilt delights, where the azure seas are said to rival those of the Caribbean, and the golden sands rank among the best in the Balearics. Located south of Ibiza, Formentera is the smallest and most southerly of the Balearics. This unspoilt island has managed to retain much of its traditional culture and its slow pace of life, making it ideal for sun-seekers wanting to relax and experience more than just a beach holiday.

Beaches

The whole coastline is bordered by beautiful beaches with fine golden sands - possibly the most beautiful are Cala Soana and Platja de Migjorn. Illetas and Levante beaches are located either side of the pinnacle of Formentera, boasting golden sands, and the widest range of watersports.

Eating out

Near to the port of La Sabina are the majority of the island's shops, bars and restaurants. Try some 'vino pages' - the island's red wine, or the local speciality 'rao' - a small fish which is said to be exclusive to the waters of Formentera. Those with a sweet tooth should not go home without sampling the traditional date and almond cake - truly wonderful.

Nightlife

Formentera is much quieter than its neighbour, Ibiza, and shares none of the nightlife for which this Balearic island is famous. Instead, evenings evolve around spectacular sunsets, delicious cuisine and long, lazy drinks. If your idea of a holiday is relaxing to the sound of lapping waves, you should visit Formentera!

Local information

Explore the stunning countryside of Formentera, punctuated with brightly-coloured wild flowers and soul-stirring sea views, by foot or mountain bike. Alternatively, immerse yourself in some of the island's history, including the Xeroni caves outside San Fernando, the hippie market in the village of El Pilar and the three prehistoric sites near to Cap de Barbaria. Shopping on the island is relatively low-key, with San Francisco Javier, the capital, having the biggest variety of shops. Es Pujols also offers a range of souvenirs shops, where ceramics are the local speciality.
