Set in a stunning east-coast bay, this appealing town blends a welcoming, mellow vibe with excellent amenities, making it a surefire family favourite. Its popularity remains fixed on its impressive beach. A crescent of silvery sand fringed by peaceful waters, relaxing here is pleasure personified. Just spread your towel and all those thoughts about the nine-to-five will disappear in … five. And to hurry along the relaxation process, punctuate your sunbathing with dips in the glassy waters, marvelling at the views of the lushly wooded hills behind the town. When you or the kids feel some energy coming on, paddle a pedalo or go it alone on a thrilling parasailing session. Then traipse to a handy bar or eatery for well-deserved cold drinks and plates of fresh fish, still spitting from the grill. Fancy an outing? Saunter to the picturebook cove at Cala Nova, dropping into the sandy bays lacing the route. Take a glass-bottomed cruise from the harbour or jump on the ferry to cosmopolitan, restaurant-loaded Santa Eulalia. Add a waterpark, minigolf and country walks and the things-to-do list is reassuringly long. Almost forgot. Every Wednesday, the town's fabled Hippie Market hits town, drawing in throngs of visitors. An explosion of funky music, beachwear and craft stalls staged in the town's pine-dotted headland, it's a paradise for bargain- and souvenir-hunters. By night, don't expect Es Cana to put on its party hat. With the exception of its waterfront live music bars, the main evening activities here are decidedly relaxed – dinner on your hotel terrace under a canopy of brilliant-white stars.
