An introduction to Ravello

With the nearest stretches of sand at Amalfi or Minori, holidays in Ravello aren't really for beach bums. But if stunning scenery is your thing, and you also like summer holidays that are steeped in history, this is the place for you. There are wonderful panoramas to feast your eyes upon, not to mention Roman and medieval remains, cloisters and churches, as well as several charming formal gardens.

Ravello has a reasonable selection of hotels, plus a few places for those who prefer self catering holidays. For those with an artistic bent, there's the Hotel Bonadies, once a church-owned building, but now a hospitable establishment frequented by artists and musicians, many of whom are inspired by the amazing views. Alternatively, for self catering holidays, Ravello has La Casarela apartments, perched precariously on a hillside on the edge of the town. With its views over the bay, the rooftop tennis court is a spectacular place for a game of doubles!

Ravello trades on its quiet, unspoilt atmosphere. So, you won't find streets full of restaurants or a sizzling nightlife scene. However, there are half or dozen or so small trattorias and pizzerias in and around the main square, which serve good quality seafood and pasta dishes. However, one of the great things about holidays in Ravello is that the livelier resort of Amalfi is just a short bus ride away. There you'll find plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as some music bars and a nightclub.
