Vedema Resort  

When a place describes itself as Santorini's most deluxe hotel, it's setting you up for a luxurious stay. In fact, the Vedema Resort is one of only a handful of Greek hotels that are part of 'The Luxury Collection' of Starwood Hotels and Resorts. A quiet complex of whitewashed and traditional stone buildings, it's built around a 400 year-old winery, so it's got all the authentic credentials.



In terms of location, this place is about as far from the madding crowd as it gets. It's set in the heart of sleepy Megalohori, a hilltop village that sits firmly in the miles-from-anywhere category. And it's a similarly serene story in the gardens. There's a chic setting wherever you turn. You'll find terraces dotted with contemporary sofas. Sleek open-air eateries with romantic lighting. And an inviting swimming pool hemmed with stylish sunbeds. Plus the hotel runs a shuttle bus down to their private section of beach.



It's a similar story inside the Vedema. The public spaces ooze barefoot chic with their sky-blue sofas, whitewashed walls and big glass vases. Ditto the apartments. With crisp whites, splashes of blue and natural wood furnishings, they're as restful as they come. There are several types of room but whichever you go for, they all come with marble bathrooms, CD players and a private balcony or terrace.



The Vedema's three restaurants and four bars are also big talking points. They don't come any more authentic than the Vinsanto, a Mediterranean eatery housed in the winery, a labyrinth of arched rooms with exposed stone walls. You'll also find the funky Canava Wine Bar down in the wine cellars; it's the perfect place to indulge in a little wine-tasting session. But the piece de resistance is the Prive dining room, where butler-served dinners a deux are the order of the day. Just big enough for two, this dinky spot barely qualifies as a restaurant but it's certainly special.
