'A lively fishing town packed with delicious tavernas, beaches and nightlife – Kokkari has a bit of everything.'
Glorious beaches, waterside tavernas and delicious walking country - Kokkari knows just how to attract holidaymakers. North west of Samos Town and backed by forested mountains, this fast-growing village sets out its wares along its seafront, where a queue of kafenions, cocktail bars and traditional tavernas vie for your custom. It may be modern-day Greece, but there's still plenty of old-world charm on display - with bright sun canopies and blue-painted chairs competing fiercely with the blue waters of the bay. Behind this lively centre, whitewashed houses and steep lanes cascade over the hillsides, creating a typically Greek island scene. And over a rocky outcrop sits the original Kokkari village around its working quayside – definitely worth an hour's pottering. Come sundown, things liven up further, with a mass of tavernas and bars ringing with laughter and live bouzoukis. A few intimate discos also turn up the volume, giving you plenty of ways to see the night through. This said, the true secret of Kokkari's success lies in the surrounding scenery. Come here and you'll have an excellent choice of beaches to mull over each morning. The town's shingle beach is excellent for catching the rays and sea breezes on a surfboard. Nearby is Tzamadou, a stunning cove swathed in peace and quiet. Or head to Lemonakia beach to swim in its transparent waters. If you're a keen walker, there's plenty to get you stepping out. Hike to the unspoiled Valley of the Nightingales and picnic in the shade of ivy-covered trees. Follow a sweet-scented woodland trail to the sleepy, vine-growing village of Manalates. Or venture to the shops of Samos Town or the picturesque island of Patmos to the west.
