Magazia has peace and quiet down to a fine art. Tucked halfway up the island, little happens here to disturb the tranquillity of this hillside hamlet. Once you're settled, the only sounds that will break your idyll are the warbling of songbirds, the phut phut of the occasional moped and the faint chatter of walkers who come here to admire the scenery. Otherwise, you'll be pretty much left to your own devices. Before breakfast, call in at the village bakery for a fresh loaf and sticky pastries to accompany your morning coffee. Pop into the grocer's for a supply of cheese, olives and wine. Then saunter back to base, relishing the thought of the long, self-indulgent day stretching before you. Beach-wsie, finding a perfect cove to bask in is easy. Point yourself in an easterly direction and you'll soon encounter a white pebble bay where you can swim in sparkling waters. Turn your attentions to village life on a bigger scale at nearby Loggos or Lakka. Eat and drink at cosy harbourfront tavernas where the tables stand inches from the water's edge. Or explore the narrow alleys of Gaios, stacked with souvenir shops and art galleries. When you're ready for more rusticity, roam the olive blanketed hills around Magazia. Wander shady roads to Agioi Apolstoli, a miniscule hamlet crowned with a lovely church. From there, head to the western cliffs to sigh over the views over Achai Bay with its cloistered caves. And if you have the energy, continue to the clifftop Sunset Bar to witness the dying sun bathe the coastline in a kaleidoscope of colour. Gorgeous.
