Almost exactly opposite each other geographically, Mastichari and Kardamena are also poles apart in style and atmosphere. While the latter buzzes with life, the former moseys along with a laid-back easiness that is the essence of the traditional Greek Islands holiday experience. While Kardamena is the place to party, Mastichari is where you sit with a glass of ouzo and drink in the magnificent views, across the sea to the islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos. The resort's beach is broad and sandy, and the heat of the strong Greek sun is usually brought down to earth a bit by a pleasant Sea Breeze from the north. This is a real boon because it's the beach where most visitors to Mastichari spend the majority of their time, soaking up the sun, swimming and maybe strolling over to one of the beachside bars for a cooling beer or a chilled glass of OJ. In the evening, Mastichari's harbour area is the centre of attraction. Half a dozen or so friendly, family run tavernas serve traditional Greek fare in pleasant surroundings, so you can sample the catch of the day or give your tastebuds an adventure with a 'mezedes' feast and try a little bit of everything. As for excursions, Mastichari is one of the main ports on the island, so boat trips tend to be a favourite. There are regular ferries to Kalymnos, once famous for its sponge fishing industry, but these days mostly netting tourists who come to absorb the beautiful scenery. And for a change of beach life, you can also ride the waves to Pserimos, a charming little island with some gorgeous stretches of sand.
