You'll come to the villages of Loumas and Skinias, with a handful of tavernas between them and a cluster of Byzantine churches they're a must for lazy days out. Head south and you pass the pebble beach and fish tavernas of Plaka before coming to Elounda – awash with gift shops, bars and eateries. From here there are boat trips to Spinalonga Island, and a causeway to the sunken city of Olous. And if things get busy, you can be back in the hills in no time…
