TripAdvisor seriously rates the Paradisus Rio de Oro. Not only has it won the 'Best for Romance' award in their 2008 Travellers' Choice awards but it's been voted the best hotel in Guardalavaca, too. And it's little wonder – this five-star, adults-only hotel sits right on the sands at Playa Esmeralda and comes with a lengthy list of facilities.

The first of which has to be the pool scene. Two huge lagoon-like pools wrap around palm-edged terraces, and curve up to a big swim-up pool bar. Add plenty of sunbeds, thatched pergolas and a setting just metres from the beach, and you'll find it hard to tear yourself away.

But if you can, there are six restaurants and five bars vying for your attention. Four of the restaurants are a la carte and serve everything from Japanese and international cuisine to Mediterranean and Creole cuisine. And as for the bars, they come in all guises – but it's the karaoke-come-disco bar that's the liveliest.

This place doesn't fall short on looks, either. In fact, it's got a style all of its own. Statues, water features and bold artwork adorn the lobby areas, while the bedrooms are a touch calmer. Painted in sunshine yellow, they're roomy, light spaces with big windows and doors that lead to a balcony or terrace. And they all come with two double beds or one king-size bed, as well as satellite TVs, fridges and air-conditioning.
