Guide to Maxwell Beach

"Sun, sea, sand and watersports; the classic Caribbean cocktail is on tap at Maxwell Beach, where the pace is slow and life's a beach."

It's not only famous as the home of the Barbados Windsurfing Club. Maxwell Beach is also one of the South Coast's best stretches of sand, with a relaxed atmosphere and a real paradise island feel. Just imagine yourself stretching out on a sun lounger as the warm Caribbean sun sends you gently into a carefree slumber. You're unlikely to be disturbed. Backed by woodland scattered with picnic tables, the beach is usually pretty un-crowded, apart from the legions of red crabs which are often sidling their way slowly down to the shore. That's not to say it's without its more lively pleasures. You can have a go at the usual watersports, including banana boat rides, donuts, water-skiing, wakeboarding, hobie cats and jet skis. As for evenings, most of the facilities and entertainment in Maxwell are centred around the laid-back, low-rise hotels that border the beach. But it's just a mile or so to lively St Lawrence Gap, where you can eat for England in one of a rich array of restaurants, sip a heart-warming rum cocktail in a traditional hostelry, sing your heart out in a karaoke bar or dance the night away at one of the happening clubs.
